Ghost Shadows

I have this "ghost shadow" that comes up on my portraits. I saw that someone else has had this problem back in September of 2000. Someone mentioned that this is because there is a stronger light source from one side of the subject. BUT I put TWO strobes to the right of the subject and the shadow was STILL there. I use a piece of tape to partially cover my on-camera flash (I use a Nikon 990) so that it still sets off my slave strobes. When the camera is set to take pictures in portrait format instead of landscape - the shadow goes away. Is this because the on-camera flash is now above the camera lens? The on-camera lens sits to the right of the lens (when facing the subject) and I am wondering if that is why the "ghost shadow" is always to the right of the subject? I would think a lot of people would be having this problem, but I can't find ANY photographic material that covers this question. If someone has an answer, please email me at diegom8@yahoo.com or simply respond on this forum - thanks!
