Cannot scan film negatives

I have just purchased an Epson 2480 Photo scanner and I can't get it to scan my negatives. When I use Epson Scan in Professional mode I can only scan in "Reflective" as "Film" is greyed out. I have tried all the modes and it scans the whole negative holder.

I'm sure I place the negative holder correctly in the scanner and have tried uninstalling Epson Scan and re-installing it but it still won't let me scan in film mode.

I would appreciate any help as I bought the scanner to scan my negatives and when I scan my photo's they come out dark and I have to spend a lot of time in Photoshop trying to fix them up.
