Upgrading Lens for Canon EOS System

I am looking to upgrade my standard Canon 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 lens for my Canon EOS system. I am a weekend/family affairs/frequent traveler type photographer. For me, optical quality is the most important quality in a lens, but I am also looking for flexibility. I am debating between buying a couple of fixed lenses and buying top quality 28-80mm type zoom lens. I've tried canon's 28mm 2.8 and their 50 mm 1.4 canon lenses and was very satisfied with their optical quality. I also tried canon's 28mm-135 3.5-4.6 IS USM lens - this lens gave me flexibility but I thought compromised too much on optical quality compared to the fixed lenses I had tried. I am now experimenting with a non-canon lens, the new Tokina 28-80 2.8 ATX Pro camera. I thought it took sharper pictures compared to Canon's 28-135 IS lens, but compared to the 50mm 1.4 lens (at the same aperture and focal length), the Tokina was a bit weaker. So now, I am debating between the Tokina 28-80 2.8 ATX Pro and buying 3 canon lenses, maybe the 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 2.8. I am also considering spending a couple of hundred of dollars more and going to Canon's 28-70mm 2.8 L lens. Basically, I am really confused and do not feel informed enough to make the right decision. I would greatly appreciate some advice!

  Have you tried http://www.photographyreview.com?

They give very good reviews on most lenses. The thing I like about it is that it is open to anybody, and so the people reviewing the lenses are everything from novice to professional.
