Photography Question

Amateur Action Shots

I took some pics at a local hockey game. I was using ISO 400 speed film with a 70mm to 300mm lens. Some of the pictures I took were blurry. Is this due to shutter speed, ISO speed? It was in automatic settings. Should I adjust the shutter speed or the ISO speed or both?
I also know using a longer heavier lens you have to use caution with your own movement. Thanks for your help.

The reason your shots were blurry is the shutter speed, which is too low for the situation. In automatic mode your camera will select one shutter speed/aperture combination somewhere in the middle of all possible combinations (taking into consideration the lighting). This is because the camera doesn't know what you're trying to shoot. If your camera has a shutter priority option, or a flexible program mode, you should use these. They will allow you to select the highest shutter speeds possible with the light you're dealing with without under exposure problems.
Now with the highest possible shutter speed with the current lighting situation, if your pictures are still coming out blurry you need to step up in ISO speeds. Being in an arena I would think you need 800 speed film.
