Teleconvert vs. Additional Lens I recently read about Teleconverts. I am trying to decide whether to buy an additional lens or a teleconverter. I currently have a 28-80mm on a Canon EOS Rebel 2000. What is the cost difference between a 2X, 3X teleconverter and a 80-300mm lens? My current lens is great but there are times when I wish it would get closer. I need help! Jeff

I got a 2x converter a few years back. Would not be without it now. I forget cost differences vs. just a new lens. But - the converter can work on multiple lenses and thus doubles your arsenal. And, it is small, light, easy to keep on hand. I'm looking for a 3X to add to my bag. John

I, too, am a big fan of teleconverters, but I would not recommend one in Jeff's case. A 1.4x and 2x teleconverter decrease the lens's maximum aperture by the same factor. Using a 2x TC on the EF 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 gives you effectively a 56-160 f/7-11 zoom that will not autofocus because the aperture is too small. The cost of a 2x TC ranges from about $80 for a poor 4-element design, to $120 for a decent 7-element design, to $200 for a very good APO model. On the other hand, for about $200 you can choose from the Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III, Sigma 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DL, or Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD, any of which would give much much better results than even an APO 2x TC on a 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 lens.
