AF focus alwways stops at normal "in-focus" range. Please email me also at techjunkie3@juno.com. I share a computer for now but can access my email with PDA

  What specific make/model lens?
With some zooms with a macro focus feature, the macro range is manual focus only.

It is a Canon EF 100-300mm MacroZoom for my Canon EOIS ElanII

I don't recall any Canon 100-300 having "Macro" as part of the name, but the old EF 100-300 f/5.6 and f/5.6L had a three position autofocus switch labeled:
"Macro - ‡" (full range autofocus from 1.5m to infinity)
"2m - ‡" (AF limited from 2m to infinity)
"M" (manual focus)

The other Canon lens, EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM, does not have a particular macro setting and is also limited to 1.5m/4.9 ft. close focus.

For this lens "macro" meant focus as close as 1.5m or 4.9 ft. You cannot focus any closer than that without using extension tubes or close-up lens.

Thank You Jon for your response. You are correct in that "Macro" is not a part of the lens designation but just a range the lens can focus from. Your explanantion is "right-on" Thanks again! Have a great Holiday season.
