Inkjet Vs. Photo Processing

I am working with a photographer for my wedding photos - a great photographer and quite pricey. He does his own printing on an inkjet printer. I wasn't totally satisfied with the photos; the colors were off and the pictures were just not smooth looking. It almost looked as if there were white specs in the photos. I want them to be matte. Should I have him process the photos in a lab with the photo process?

Did he shoot your wedding in digital? If so, the digital files will print well on high-end professional digital printers (if he shot 'em at a high enough resolution). Matte paper exists for these printers.
If he shot them on conventional film, then you have the right to ask for quality printing. Inkjet prints may fade more quickly than conventional prints. All prints will fade if hung in the sun or bright light long enough.
For your money, you deserve the best.

If this is a true professional, then you would get the best for the money. Most Pros want their customer to be very pleased with their product. Pride in doing the job the best it could be done under resonable circumstances and the simple fact they depend on repeat business. They can not afford to offer you second best. You chose this pro for a reason, if you express this, they will work with you when the requests are reasonable. This is quite reasonable. I enjoy all the photographic meduims that we have to choose from today, but I will always strive for 100% customer satisfaction first. It is up to the Pro to choose which format will deliver the best results. Hang in there, if your photographer is a true Pro, then they will make it right for you. I agree with Doug, for your money, you deserve the best.

I have yet to see an inkjet printer that even comes CLOSE to the quality of a Fuji Frontier Digital Lab System. Unlike an inkjet printer, the Frontier System uses a silver halide process - just like FILM! It finishes your prints on Fuji Chrystal Archive (Matte) paper. In my humble oppinion, a pro photographer should get his eyes checked if he/she cannot see the enormous difference between inkjet and silver halide from digital.

Walmart's minilab can process up to 8x10 prints for you. The only downside is that the back of your prints may reveal where you did your processing. Currently the largest prints available from a Frontier System are 10" in width. Larger prints may be obtained from specialized photo houses using similar equipment.

I agree with Clark C. I use Wal-mart for my digital pictures and they are very inexpensive. If you are giving pictures as gifts and have them framed and matted, who will know where you get them. I will NEVER use my inkjet again for any of my photos unless it is for a quick copy. It just isn't worth the lesser quality, or price for that matter.

Ask your Pro if you are entitled to a disk copy of your pictures. I understand that some people using digital simply sell you the disk as they realize that people with their own scanners may scan their own copies of proof anyway....unethical or not. Your wedding is too important to settle for less than high quality.
