How to shoot weddings when no flash is allowed

I am a new "professional" photographer & am just now venturing into weddings - I use a Canon EOS-D30 digital camera. My problem is during weddings many churches do not allow flash photography - is there a "secret" to those beautiful soft photos I see in dimly-lit churches? How do I get a photo that is light enough to see faces from the back of a church without using a flash?

I have a EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens just for this kind of situation.

Another alternative, the EF 50mm f/1.8 (without the USM) which is only half a stop slower and very affordable. As I am taking more paid assignments, I have to keep buying new equipments. So I understand how you feel. Before I got that EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, I used my all manual Canon AT-1 with the FD 50mm f/1.4 as backup.
