I am having trouble keeping shots in focus

What rule of thumb should I use to make sure my subject stays in focus?

I see that you are shooting a Canon AE1 with a 75-100mm and trying to get good shots at a baseball game. Autofocus models are going to help an enormous amount in such situations. However, if budget keeps that from solving your problem, you can likely get good results by predicting a focus point and waiting for the action to come to you. You may also need to use a tripod or monopod; with a long lens like that, the possibilities of camera shake causing your problem are high. Use some kind of support and a fast speed film.
