Flash and Depth of Field

I am using an A2 SLR with a Canon Dedicated flash. How do I control Depth of field when the camera syncs at f4 and 1/60? I can control it without the flash by changing the aperture, but when using the flash it seems only my subject is in focus. This causes a problem when I shoot a group shoot with people on different focal planes.

Thanks,
Flashed up

When you use a Speedlight while the camera is set to the "green box" or the P (program) modes, the camera's program defaults to hand-holdable shutter speeds (1/60-1/200) and a largish aperture (f/4). If you want to control depth of field you need to shoot in Av (aperture priority) or M (manual) mode.

In any of the modes, the flash output is controlled automatically using (depending on the flash brand and model), a built-in sensor, or off the film TTL (through the lens) metering, or Canon's more advanced A-TTL.

In Av mode you'll need to use a tripod, because the camera will try to set a shutter speed slow enough to fully expose the background and the Speedlight will provide fill flash.

In Manual mode you can set any combination of aperture and shutter speed you want (up to the A2's sync speed of 1/200). The Speedlight will provide automatic fill flash.

In regards to the previous answer to this question, the Canon A2 can not change its flash shutter speed from 1/60 of a second. Even if the flash he is using has the ability to do ETTL the camera still does not. I beleve the best results can be reached by using a tripod with no flash and using a longer exposure time to achieve proper lighting

dmather is incorrect. The A2 is near-professional model autofocus SLR. In M (manual) or Tv (shutter priority) modes the shutter will flash-sync at any speed the user sets, up to 1/200 second. The old manual focus Canon AE-1 models have flash sync at 1/60, but these too can sync with a flash at slower shutter speeds.
