Flash for Canon Rebel

In general, you should buy one with a tilt or tilt/pivot head so you can "bounce" flash to reduce harsh shadows and eliminate red-eye, and get the highest guide number (most powerful) you can afford. Third party manufacturers (Metz, Sunpak, Vivitar,...) make decent units, but they meter either with their own built-in sensor, or simple TTL (through the lens) metering by the camera. If your camera is an original Rebel or Rebel X/XS, then that's as much as you need. If you own a Rebel G or Rebel 2000, then you can utilize their more sophisticated A-TTL multi-zone flash metering if you use a Canon EZ or EX model Speedlight. Both the Rebel G and Rebel 2000 can utilize Canon's latest E-TTL multi-zone flash metering system with a Canon EX model Speedlight. Additionally, both the G and 2000 are capable of FP high speed flash sync to 1/2000 with the Canon EX Speedlights. With Canon EZ Speedlights or third party flashes the maximum flash sync shutter speed is 1/90.

P.S. Some third party flashes are fully compatible with the Canon system. For example, Sigma's new EF-500 Super flash is designed to work with E-TTL and FP high speed flash sync.
