At a Modest Price I want a modest priced 35mm SLR (i.e., Canon Rebel 2000, Nikon N60) with auto and manual capabilities with easy to use controls and easy to read light meter. Which camera brand and model is better?

I prefer the Canon Rebel 2000 for ease of use and auto/manual capabilities. They are both excellent, though. If you have used and enjoyed Nikon SLRs in the past, go with that.
