November 2011 Countdown Thread
Wow - and now the end of the year is quickly approaching. Soon it will be time to say goodbye to 2011 and usher in the New Year! I, for one, am looking forward to that - this year has had its share of ups and downs (that's life, right?), but I'm going to hope that everyone is enjoying a blessed holiday season and that the New Year will bring us all good fortune - and if not fortunes, then I'll take happiness and good health! ;-)!So, it's that time of the month again - and last month, I had barely posted this thread and the finalists were announced. I'm posting a couple days early this time, and we will see when they decide to announce. My fingers are crossed for all the favorites! Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads: 1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.) 2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen. 3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery. 4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost.
Good luck everyone!!!

My favorite is of my Baby Boy - I can't resist my little guy! Hoping the judges can't resist him either.

Abundant Light
Washington National Cathedral reopened to the public 11/13, 80 days after the M5.8 VA earthquake. The worst of the tons of damaged masonry has been safely stabilized, and heavy dismantling is underway. Thus, 11/19 was the first Saturday of touring, and the celebratory mood was boosted by strong sunlight in crystal-clear air. That called for a visit to the south arcade aisle featuring Wilson's tomb. It is my annual tradition to shoot the morning light of late fall/early winter in this aisle; no other time produces quite this light show! All the pools of color are sunlight through stained glass; no colors added in editing. Each year, I've tried to improve on the prior year's image; I think this is the best result I've produced in all 5 years; the wide-angle lens finally let me capture some of the far nave wall and colors behind the tomb. 3 RAW wide-bracketed exposures, adjusted to 6 files for HDR, at 10mm.

A tough one to pick (then again, most every month seems tough---I'm always hopeful for every image I enter! ;) But, this one I love, and it has a kind of sentimental appeal as well, since I've recreated some variation on this scene for the last 5 years or so, steadily improving the results each year.

Back Patio
Finalist Found this in Santa Fe in March, 2011 -- these objects had obviously been on this small, deeply shaded patio area a very long time. I had to lean over a barrier and shoot around a corner to get it. The light/shadow contrast was extreme so I created five exposures of the image digitally and combined them in Photomatix to see if I could salvage the shot. I like the way this experiment turned out -- much better than I dared hope. Resubmitted June 24, 2012 Category: Catch-All

Finally remembered to come here before entering for today. Like so many others, I always find it hard to pick just one. This month I got it down to three. I'll show my first choice (which I think the least likely of the three to make Finalist) and add links to my 2nd and 3rd (I actually think my 3rd choice is the most likely to final). 2nd choice: Green Gables 3rd choice: Little Hand

Okay, very happy I didn't wait until the 15th to post this thread - we wouldn't have had any thread at all this month! I'm elated I finally picked a favorite that the judges liked too (of course, you all know I'm a sucker for my little guy). Congratulations to all the finalists and good luck in the next round! Happy early Holiday present from the judges!

Congratulations, Michelle and thanks, Chris. And good luck to you, Michelle, in the next round. I'm getting wonderful comments on mine and that's very gratifying. We'll see. Thanks for hosting the thread.
