Black & white film only records black & white (and shades of gray). Colored filters affect only contrast, they cannot possibly add any color to black & white film. Sepia toning is a custom chemical process applied when making a black & white print. A sepia filter is intended for use with color film to give a vintage look. Alternatively the filter can be utilized by printing the black & white negative on color paper and using the sepia filter in the enlarger.
