Using a External mounted flash

Hi,

My questions has to do with using an external mounted flash on my Canon EOS 1N. The flash I use is a Speedlight 380EX. The problem I'm finding when I use that flash indoors is that flash is so powerful that the subject is alomst to bright and the rest of the photos is "blacked out". I think I undersatnd why it does this, but I don't know how to correct it. One interesting note is that when I shoot with the small built in flash on My Canon Elan IIe indoors it is not so harsh and the majority of the picture is much more balanced. I'm guessing this is do to the smaller flash. But again do you have a suggestion on how to get a more even well lite exsposure?? One other note, I have a type of flash on my point and shoot digi cam that fires a "pre flash" or strobe affect and this also results in a well exsposed photo with flash. I'm trying to duplicate these reuslts with my "pro" camera.-Thanks so much

The flash (whether the 380EX or the built-in) is controlled by the TTL flash exposure metering and will only give enough flash to properly expose your near subject, but not enough to light the background. The background is going dark because your combination of shutter speed and aperture is not allowing enough ambient light to the film. What mode (PIC, green box, P, Av, Tv, M) and what lens are you using with the flash on the 1N and the Elan IIe? The 1N allows a higher maximum flash sync shutter speed than the Elan IIe (1/250 v. 1/125). If you use the flash with the shutter speed at 1/250 instead of 1/125 your flash-exposed near subject will be unchanged, but the background will only get 1/2 the light (be twice as dark).
