How to meter for chocolate brown shirts

I am going to take a photo of some friends tomorrow and they are wearing chocolate brown shirts. I tried this before and the brown came out looking black. Is there a way to prevent this. This family has very light and some member are also medium dark skin. The guys are wearing light shirts and the women brown. Oh boy, any suggestions???

I know it is too late for the shot you want based on the date you asked this question, but if this comes up again try this. Use the center weighted metoring selection and place it on the shirt. Then try a minus 1 or 1.5 compensation setting. If the shirt is black you would set it on minus 2. If it is the color of the palm of your hand it would be set at +1. If it is white it would be +1.5 or 2.

Thanks Donald. I will try this in the future.
