Is this a memory card problem? I just got a new camera, the Sony HX1..I got a 4 GB memory stick, also by Sony..If I just have a small batch of photos, nothing seems to go wrong, but with a larger batch I was getting maybe one shot that after I put it on the computer and opened it for the first time, when I close it, I can't open it again..it says "Could not open(file name) because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found".. When it was just one shot, I didn't worry about it too much, but this last batch I shot of 91 shots, I got 6 bad ones. Is it my card or my camera, or does anybody have any other ideas what could be wrong? If nobody knows, I'll jump down Sony's throat, but would rather not, if somebody has an idea what's wrong.

And I found another memory stick that will fit, so maybe I can narrow it down by running a bunch of shots with that stick in and see if I get more of the same.

Hi Carolyn, Are you formatting the card before each use ? After I download my images, I put the card back in the camera and erase the images and then format the card and have never had a problem. You can also do this on the computer but its recomended to do this in the camera. Just be sure to have the power "OFF" when removing or inserting a card as I have fried a CF card by inserting with the power ON :o) Also, never format when you have images you want on the card as this can delete them. Formatting will clean the card so that any new data will be uncorrupted by not recording over previous photos/data. Hope this helps, Carlton

I do format after every download. I'm going to try to reset the camera..also am trying another memory stick to see if any problems with that.

Have you tried the same card on another computer ? I would try that then try a different card. Memory cards can & do get out of whack sometimes. I had a few problems with Lexar (I lost over 250 photos off 2 different cards) but since switching to Sandisk, I have only had one go bad and that was the one I fried by inserting into the camera with the power on so that was my fault. Also you may think about the speed of your card and how fast the camera is trying to write to it. I use fast cards and rarely shoot multiple frames at once but if you are shooting something like 6 frames per second, the images are kept in the camera buffer until they can write to the card. This isn't usually a problem but it is a possibility.

I only have access to this one computer, so I haven't tried that. It probably isn't speed related since they were all shot the same place, time, speed, etc. This is Sony's memory stick and I've had literally dozens of them with no problems..so it might be the camera. I've reset the camera and will try with both cards today or tomorrow and see what happens. Then I'll know if it's camera or card, because the one card I've had for a couple of years, so I know it's good.

Well, between Sony and me, we decided it's not the memory stick, so the camera is on it's way to the repair center for a free fix..still under warranty.
