GOOD MORNING SANDRA,
I DO IT BY OPENING A IMAGE IN PS.
THEN USING THE IMAGE ADJUST, GO TO HUE AND SATURATION MOVE THE SATURATION ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT,THIS NOW GIVE YOU A BLK&WHITE- THEN GO TO HISTORY BRUSH AND PAINT.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO CROP THE IMAGE BEFORE HAND.
I DO HOPE THIS HELPS,
DEBBY

  Hi Debby!

I too do this "Selective Hand Colorization" in gimp. But it is a pretty lenghty procedure.

Thanks for your answer.

Do you use film or digital?

if digital than what Debby said, if you use film, than you would develope the picture on matt fiber based paper, and than there are photo painting oils that you can buy and hand color your image, these are rather expensive, so digital will be cheaper, but there are pros and cons to both.

hope this helps

Siddhun K., nice to finally find someone else on this site that uses GIMP. Still learning the program, but I like it.

If you are shooting film, you can always convert to a digital file (by scanning the negative) an work on it with your image editor.

Sara, if you want to go for a different look you can try this. In PS go to Hue/Saturation and only desaturate the greens, and/or blues, and/or magentas etc. - Play around with it until you get something you like. For instance, if you took a picture of a boy in blue overalls in a park you could leave his overalls pretty blue while desaturating the green grass, yellow/red skin, and so on. This takes a lot less time and can look great if done right.

I've been writing to other members to find out the same thing. I currently have 5 editing programs, but I haven't been able to find any history brushes or anything that allows me to do selective colorization. Does anyone know anything about these packages I have: Adobe Photo Deluxe 1.0; MGI PhotoSuite 4.10 1998; Printmaster Gold Deluxe 4.0; Printshop Deluxe 20; and Kodak Windows Imaging 95-97.

These are all fairly cheap & some of them came with my computer. Maybe I should just break down & purchase a better quality package.

  Hello Mr.Kathy,

Since Photgraphy is my hobby/interest work, also I use Film_SLR camera, I don't like to spend $ on buying editing software.
One of the Free Softwares and supurb working environment it gives (easy and simple), is "GIMP" , (available for Linux as well as Windows)
You get it from http://www.gimp.org

It has Tutorial Section tooo...to do all these magic works (selctive colrization and Image Sharpening, Cloning etc..,)
No need to ask for more help once you start working on it and learning from Tutorials..)
Please try it out.

With regards,
Siddhun.M.Karthik

Sandra, I've always adjusted the picture, cleaned it up and resized it before converting it to B/W and adding back colour. Just before converting it to black and white I take a snapshot and then use the history brush over the area I want coloured. I have a few shots in my gallery of this. I also downloaded some Adobe Photoshop Plugins to convert pictures to Black and White.
Good luck
Kevin
