Black background in wildlife photos I am tring to get my backgrounds to be black in some of my wildlife photos when taking them, I don't want to have to use photoshop to do it, and just want it to happen when I take the photo. I shoot outdoors, and am using 2 camera's, one is a Canon ELAN7 35mm, and a Sony DSC F-717, I have seen it done by other people before ,but can't seem to do it, how can I do this???

You can accomplish this by using flash with a fast shutter speed. The flash will illuminate the subject and its immediate surroundings, but everything else not within the range of the flash will be black. You can also get a similar look using available light by holding a piece of black foam-core or poster board behind the subject.

thank you very much, it would be hard to hold somthing behind the subject, but the flash and shutter speed, I would love to try. most of the wildlife I will be shooting like this, I can't get that close too, but thank you very much for the flash and shutter speed thing.

You can only shoot this phenomena if the lighting conditions are condusive. Your subject must be in bright sunlight, and the background must be in dark shade. If you meter for the bright sunlight only, your background should go pretty dark, if not totally black. I use this technique often for outdoor garden shots. You cannot 'create' this lighting situation outdoors. It has to be there, and you have to see it. When shooting wildlife, constantly scout for dark shaded areas where the animals can be in front lit by the sun. Strong front, side, or backlighting will work as long as your initial background is dark to begin with. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net
