sharp focus AND get the background
in order to get the colors of the background lights, I shoot slow w/slow sync flash. BUT I also want to keep the foreground (the girl) in good sharp focus. so far my pics have a crappy quality look to them when I try this!what am I doing wrong?

ps: ~at f5.6 1/80 frontsync, I completely blacken the background even tho the subject is well-focused. ~at 4.5 1/5 slowsync, I get the nice colors and lights in the background, but my subjects aren't nearly as sharp.

At 1/5 second, your subject has to remain completely motionless to get a sharp photo...even with flash, since any movement before (or after) the flash burst will also record. Have you tried a higher ISO setting? That would permit a faster speed at the same aperture and yield the same resulting exposure,..(with a little more grain or "noise", though).
