Exosure

Hi All,

I'm shooting with an old Poco 4x5 metering with a Sekonic. I'm still wrestling with the concept of exposure. I have a couple of questions:

1. The meter has a white ball on it at the top that moves in or out depending on how I twist th etop. What or how does the position affect my meter reading? I'm trying to get "good" exposures with clean white and tonal greys (think Bruce Weber).

2. Most of the time I'm using Polaroid T54/55 film. Usually I get alot of dark images...sometimes too dark to use. Do I need to give the image MORE time (light) or less time (light)? Can someone give me a clear example?

In the final stages of everything I try to fix the problems with Photoshop, but sometimes the images are just super dark and un-usable. Exposure is just one of those areas where I can't conceptually "get it". Any and all suggestions would be really wonderful.

Cheers!

The user manual for your meter would help. See http://www.sekonic.com/manuals.html. With the "lumisphere" (white ball) fully extended the meter reads the incident light level. You generally don't need to make exposure corrections to this reading since it does not depend on whether the light is being reflected from white/gray/black subject.

With the lumisphere lowered the reading is more directional and is used to measure contrast differences, say between main and fill lights.
