Photography Question

Brinn MacDougall

Viewing images on two different monitors.

I was given a lap-top recently. I was shocked when I viewed my photos on the monitor. On my 19" monitor, my shots are well saturated and much darker. I have my settings high on contrast and brightness. It's set on 800x600 @32bit color. I love the way the pics look posted in the contest..but, mine are all off when I look at them on the lap-top. How can I change this? Which one is right? I hate to change my 19" settings for printing..but I want my photos to look like I edited them in the contest.

Brinn, congratulations, you have just created an open system and now need to bring everything into synch. The display problem is your two monitors are very different in technology and likely very different in profiles as well. First, on your desktop, calibrate or profile the monitor. If you have Photoshop, it includes a utility called "Adobe Gamma." if you have not done so (or not done so for a while) run this utility and adjust the monitor accordingly. Although it uses a subjective approach to setting the monitor (your own perception) it gets things in the vicinty of correct meaning it displays colors accurately based on the RGB values. This is an essential first step in any system-wide calibration. If you are really serious about color you need to get or borrow a good monitor calibration set-up.

Then do the same with the laptop. Because of the differences in technology, getting EXACTLY the same color throughout the monitors' gamuts is not terribly likely, they ought to get close enough that you can work on the desktop accurately and not be scandalized by what you see on the laptop.

If you are using a Mac they have a built in utility called Color Synch that is similar to Adobe Gamma.
