Grainy photos from Digital SLR

I recently bought a Nikon D70 Digital SLR. I am new to this format, having only used a Canon point and shoot before but am interested in learning to use the new camera. I picked this camera because it has AUTO modes to start me off while I learn to use the manual functions. My problem is that while using the auto modes, my pictures often come out extremely grainy. They are taken in all sorts of settings from outdoor daylight, overcast, indoor, seems like it doesn't matter where they are taken about 80% of my shots aren't even worthy of putting in an album. I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the camera and wasted time and developing costs. I have tried two different places for developing with similar results. PLEASE HELP before I sell this camera! Thanks.

Maybe your iso setting is too high??
Developing digital?

I think you might be right Bob, I thought that the AUTO setting chose ISO for me, but looking at the menu on the camera, I now see that you have to choose a setting in the menu to make the camera choose it automatically. I've turned it on, hope that works, and thanks for your help! Shalegh

You also might want to check your image quality settings...I have a D70, and I set mine on "fine" for image quality and "large" for image size (if you are confused here, look in your user's manual). Your current settings should be displayed in the bottom left corner of the camera's LCD screen..
Hope this helps...
