Samsung camera issues

Hi,
I'm wondering if any of you know some place to get my stupid Samsung Digi-Cam fixed?

Long story, but here's the short version:

We purchased the camera at Best Buy when we saved money on a computer. Bought the camera the same time. It was a display model that was being clearanced. I used it only a few times trying to learn it within that last year, and during the later part of that year, my husband asked for a divorce. Life went south and I forgot about the camera and getting it fixed.

Needless to say, the warranty expired and now I have a camera that doesn't work properly. Samsung basically wants nothing to do with it because it is no longer under warranty.

I don't have a lot of money to buy a new, but everybody tells me that it would be just as cheap to do that as to get this one fixed.

I miss having a camera, but if I have to spend a couple hundred, I may as well get a few disposables and hope for the best. I just don't have the money right now.

Any suggestions?

What, exactly, is wrong with the camera?
Otherwise, I agree with "everybody." If the repair would be more than $150, then you might as well get a new digi camera, or a cheap film camera or disposables until you can afford more.

I think the camera would actually take good pictures, but they are not focused. The images' colors are good, but the edges are all blurry. The manual says there is a way of manipulating the focus while in the movie mode, but it doesn't say any thing about being able to focus while in still mode.

I suspect it is just all out of whack from being "tested", but the directions are not very easy to follow. When I called Samsung to ask about it, they were not at all helpful since it is out of warranty.

I guess I should have asked, which specific model?

Oops, I should have stated the model, sorry!

It is a MiniDV Digital-cam. 20x digital zoom 900x. I haven't really used the movie side of it. Like I said, I've barely used it at all, but now that this is the only camera I have, I'd like to start using it.

I scrapbook, and would like to use it for that. I also show dogs, and that is the main reason I got it - so I had the option of taking stills or moving pictures at dog shows. I bought the computer at the same time, set up so it would allow manipulation in both medias.

  SC-Dxxx? SC-D303?
It is primarily a video camera, and while it can record still photos, it cannot do so with very high resolution. The pictures are only 1.4 megapixel (640 x 480), and heavily compressed to .jpg files (even at "Super Fine" setting. If you use the digital zoom the image will only get worse. Digital zoom simply enlarges a small part of the image (using even fewer pixels). Without seeing any samples, I suspect there is nothing wrong or faulty with your camera, it is just not the proper tool for what you want.

Re - Focus
In the manual, under BASIC RECORDING, Viewfinder is a note on "Adjusting the Focus." This applies only to the viewfinder, and is to match it to your eye or eyeglass prescription. It has no effect at all on focusing the camcorder lens or the image recorded. In a later part of the manual, under ADVANCE RECORDING, is a section on manual focusing. However, manual focus with this camcorder is not going to be very precise because you are looking at a very small low resolution electronic viewfinder, and the motorized focus is likely to "overshoot" focus.

Nothing on the camera itself to indicate SC-D???. On the manual, it says SCD107.

Well, heck! If I'd have known that it isn't much good for stills, I wouldn't have bought it. I was hoping for something that would do both well.

So, can you recommend a digital camera for around $250.00-$300.00? I am on a very limited budget, but will have extra hours coming up at work, so I may be able to afford to get something that I can use the way I want to. BLAST those idjits at Best Buy! Guess they do tell you only what you want to hear. I really thought, after reading the manual prior to buying it, that it would work for what I wanted it for. Guess I was wrong again. (I figured it had to at least be better than the Kodak 2 megapixels I had before)

Thanks for your help and patience!
