Built-in Flash Too Bright on Sony DSC-H1

I have a Sony DSC-H1 camera with 12x optical zoom. It has a built in flash that is far too bright to use indoors even at the lowest setting. Consequently, I use no flash when shooting indoors, but have to use a tripod, so my photos will not be blurry from camera shake. The image stablizer doesn't help much. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can work around this? Is there anything I can use to block some of the built-in flash?

Sam
