How to connect 2 teleconverters together

I would like to at times connect my 2 teleconverters together. I have a Nikon af-s TC-14EII (1.4x) and nikon af-s TC20EII. I have tried to connect them but it feels like something is keeping them from connecting. I've seen it done but so far haven't figgured it out yet. Any help will be grateful!

  Larry,
I don't have a Nikon, so I'm not familiar with the details of its mount. On my Canon, each lens (or teleconverter) has a dot that matches up with a mark on the camera body.

Are you sure you are lining them up correctly?

Even if you get them to mount, I'm not sure if this will actually work. I've never seen anything in the descriptions of teleconverters indicating that they can be stacked.

Extension tubes, which are used for macro photography, ARE intended to me stacked, but I don't know about stacking teleconverters.

Chris

Hi Chris! Yes I have tried lineing them up but it just ain't clicking. I was at a seminar this past weekend and saw pics of the two pieces together. Must be some little trick to it?

I don't have 1st hand experience with the Nikon AF-S TCs, but they seem to be similar to Canon's in that the front element extends a bit beyond the mount. With Canon's EF 1.4x II and EF 2x II, they can be coupled in only one way: lens + 2x + 1.4x + camera. The back of the 2x has space for the front element of the 1.4x. They will not mate if you try to switch the order.

Or, the Nikons may be similar to the earlier versions of Canon's TCs, which could only be combined with a 12mm extension tube between them.

Jon beat me to it. ;-)

I did a search and found posts on a couple of forums about people stacking TCs, so obviously, it can be done.

I was going to make the same recommendation, that you try swapping them around.

I won't bother with the usual warning that this will obviously degrade your image quality. You'll figure that out soon enough. And even if you have a fast lens, you will probably lose your autofocus capability.

The bottom line is that this could be fun just to play around with. Really big lenses cost really big bucks.

When I was in college, I found a Vivitar 3x TC in Pentax mount at a garage sale and bought it just for fun. I used to use it with a 400mm f/5.6 on my K1000. So it was like a 1200mm f/16 or so. In bright sunlight, or with ISO 400 film, I was able to get some decent images. Just for fun. ;-)
