Photography Question

Sam L. Van Almen

Converters? filters? or what?

Recently bought old minolta X 700
it came with a set of filters or converters marked PROMASTER SPECTRUM 7 49mm +2 also one marked +2 and another marked +4

what the heck are these for? I suspect they are for use with extreme closeups as it is impossible to focus camera at any distance further than a few feet

  welcome sam,
yeah your on the right track.the 49mm is the filter size for the lens.the 2 and 4 are the strengths of the closeup filters,for macro work.allows you to focus a lot closer,and depth of field is very limited.not as good as a true macro lens but a nice cheap alternative.

  Wazzup Sam;

Congrats on joining the X700 club. If you take good care of your camera, it will last for many years. I have two, and love them dearly. As for the close-up lenses, you didn't get a #3 filter because you can stack the #1 & #2. I think about everyone here on BP has used them. I use them in about all my macro work. Have fun with them.

Have fun and keep shooting.

thankx for the information

i really wanted to go digital (gadget freak) but really couldnt afford the over $1000 price tag for a true digital SLR

I had been shooting with a cannon rebel but fell on hard times a few years ago and had to sell it

found the Minolta at a pawn shop with 4 lenses (35mm, 50mm, 70-135 zoom a 2x converter, an 80-200 zoom, croker filter package, flash unit, original manual and a cheap (small) bag that it was all stuffed into for $90!

I had forgotten what REAL photography was all about I used the cannon in point and shoot auto focus auto flash mode 99% of the time. it might as well have been a $9 single use.

i am again discovering what the art of photography is all about

i appreciate your response and am very excited about taking well thought out, composed, focused (not nesc. in focus) photos again

sorta takes me back to photography 101 as an art major in 1971. except now I have the benifit of Adobe Photo Shop!

I really love the x700 but cant help wanting a motor drive for it (gadget guy)

thankx for talking with me

sam

attached is the best photo I think I have ever taken

  Hey Sam;

If you want THE motor drive for the X700, go on ebay. I got the MD-1 motor drive (3.5 frames per second max) for 79.99. This drive even has the vertical use shutter button that has the bullseye electronics, plus the front grip. B&H camera wants $139.95 for it. Ebay's usually got quite a selection of them. And let me just say that you got a heck of a deal on the camera.

  No, he didn't. He said he had a +2, a +2, and a +4. I guessed that one of the +2's was actually a +1. If it's not, I'm sorry. It was just a guess.
