Sony DSC-P71 wont shoot pictures

My Sony Digital Camera DSC-P71 wont shoot pictures. I am not able to shoot, record nor do anything. Do you think the camera has got locked or something... On calling their repairs office, I was told to reset the camera or try switching the camera on/off. Have done that and even put in new batteries too. No luck. I just dont know why the shutter button wont work/shoot pictures. Can you help ???

  - what kind of batteries? The P71 works best (only?) with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Make sure they are fully charged. Single-use alkalines, lithiums, etc. are not recommended.

- Does the camera "power up," showing life in the LCD? Can you do other functions, like zoom the lens, change settings, or review photos already taken?

- Do you have a memory stick loaded in the camera? Is it full? Is it's tab set to "LOCK"? Is the mode dial set to the camera icon, or SCN?

If you've gone thru the new battery/restart and operational procedure thru the manual, tried new memory storage, then the most likely cause for complete failure (no lights, screen display, anything) is a broken power circuit.

If it's just the screen dying, yours and other Sonys have had trouble with CCD sensors/wiring and there is a 'free repair' notice out at Sony website:

"October 3, 2005 - It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony Digital Still Cameras that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:

When the Digital Still Camera is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder will show either a distorted image or no image.

We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of units.

In its effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony has elected to offer a free repair to the owners of applicable Digital Still Cameras if the image sensor device, CCD chip, causes one of the above-mentioned conditions. Accordingly, customers who have a Sony Digital Still Camera as outlined below and if said Sony Digital Still Camera exhibits the above-mentioned condition caused by the image sensor device, CCD chip, may contact the special call center set forth below for free repair:
