Uploading pictures from camera

I have a Canon Digital Rebel SLR. I have a card reader and have no problem using the card reader to download my pics or downloading them straight from the computer.

I buy a new Canon Powershot A610 and a new card reader. (Had to buy new card reader because old one does not take the same card size that goes with the Powershot. I cannot download pictures from card reader or even directly from camera. We have tried all usb ports (in front of tower and in back) They connect with the computer (meaning they show in "My Computer" but will not download pics. A computer friend of mine tried lots of things ie. new drivers etc. I do have a pirated copy of Windows XP but have had it for a couple of years with no problems. Oh, also, friend brought over his jump drive to show me some picture they took in Mexico and that wouldn't load either. Do you have any suggestions ?????? HELP HELP I can handle anything but not being about to fool with my pictures. I am taking another Photoshop class right now and I am so upset not being able to access my pictures.. Hope someone can give me some help. Thanks.

Ok first of all take a deep breath and put it all into perspective.

To me it sounds like you have a dodgy camera or memory card.

  Hi Karen,
Have your friend help you unistall the usb reader from your device manager. Then reboot your computer ; plug in the device with a memory card installed and let the computer find the new hardware again. It will then ask if you want to have it auto install necessary driver, click manually install and browse to your cd rom drive and place your disk that came with your card reader there. Hopefully it will then work. Make sure you are using a usb driver and also check the manufacturer's site as many drivers are constantly upgraded in dealing with bugs & conflicts. Good Luck!
