KB: I think the reason you're not getting many replies is that your primary question, what lights to buy, has been asked and answered here a lot. I suggest that you do a search for "studio lighting" and review what's available then ask something a bit more specific.

Beyond that, which lighting eq. to buy is a highly subjective decision based on use, intended present and future, budget, manufacturer preference, accessories available, and whether you want used equipment or new. If you buy used, you tend to get more bang for your watt second buck.

Best place to buy new lighting, in my experience is http://www.bhphotovideo.com.

For used equipment, stay off e-bay unless you REALLY know what you're looking for and how to determine whether it's properly working (which is tough to do sight unseen). Try http://www.keh.com
