Error 99

I did a search on this and found some things that helped. I have a Quantary 75-300mm lens on Rebel 300D and found if I keep it in the sports mode it works okay, but I would like to use it in other modes and I get the error 99 when there is to much light (outside on the golf course or inside well lit hockey rink) is there any advise for this lens or should I just use it were it works and get a different lens? I would like some recommended lens for taking pictures in a hockey rink. Thanks for any help you can offer, this is my first digital camera of this class and I like it so for.(except for the error 99)

John

Your lens is probably Sigma-made prior to 2002. These lenses are not fully compatible with the latest EOS bodies and require an updated ROM chip to restore full function. Contact Ritz or Sigma about getting the lens updated.

See http://www.sigma-photo.com/faq/faq.php?navigator=3" (scroll down to FAQ #7), and http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html#compatibilitythirdparty
