FLASH POWER ZOOM HEAD

I HAVE A NIKON 5005 WITH A NEW VIVITAR 850AF FLASH,BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE CAMERA THE POWER ZOOM HEAD WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS MODEL.MY QUESTION IS, DO I NEED TO MANUALLY PRESET THE SETTING ON THE FLASH TO MATCH THE SETTINGS ON THE LENS.I SHOT A TEST ROLL JUST USING ONE SETTING AND THE EDGES OF THE PHOTOS WERE UNDER EXPOSED.THE LENS IS A AF NIKKOR 35-70MM. THANKS

Yes, if the flash head does not zoom automatically, then set it manually. Always set it for the same or shorter than the lens focal length. If you don't want to constantly change the setting, simply set it to match the shortest focal length of your zoom (or shorter).
