Photography Question

Eliza R. Daniels

confused about one of my lenses...

I have a Quantaray 500mm lense w/macro. Whenever I try to use it, I can't focus on hardly ANYTHING, then if I do, I am unable to fully depress the shutter release. I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong, because I would like to be able to use this, but obviously am clueless. Anyone...help.

  You may be too close to your subject. Do you have the documentation that came with the lens? You need to find out what the minimum focus distance is for the lens.

  Re - the shutter not releasing:
I'm guessing by the notes in your gallery that you're using it on a Maxxum HTsi. Most Maxxum models, including that one, have a default setting that won't let the shutter trip if it cannot communicate electronically with a lens. The Quantaray 500mm f/8 w/Macro is completely manual, using a T-mount adapter to fit the Maxxum mount, but has no electronic connection.

Some Maxxum bodies have a custom function to override that setting, but unfortunately, I don't think the HTsi is one of them. You might try setting CF 1 to "2". If that doesn't work then the HTsi cannot be used with T-mount lenses, and I'm not aware of a work-around solution (though there may be one).

You could get another T-mount (for Minolta MD) for the lens so it can be used on your X-500/X-570;
Or upgrade to a Maxxum body that has a custom function that overrides the shutter lock (like the Maxxum 5);
Or return/sell/exchange the Quantaray lens and get instead Minolta's compatible (with autofocus!) Maxxum AF Reflex 500mm f/8.

  Thanks for the tips. I bought this camera and all its lenses from a photographer going digital. None of the lenses had the books with them anymore. The only things I am having trouble with are the Quantaray lense, and a Vivitar 2x autofocus teleconverter. Does anyone know what to use this second thing for. I do mostly portraits, so I am thinking I probably won't use it, if it is what I think it is.

  hey eliza,
the 2x converter mounts on the camera,then you mount a lense on the converter.it doubles the length of the lense.so if you mount a 300mm lense to the 2x converter,you get 600mm.kinda neat but you'll lose a couple stops of light and some clarity.
as far as being autofocus,not really.unless you have an enormous amount of light it just searches.but in manual it works just fine.and no it isn't good for portraits.
i have a 500mm lense and the closest focusing is 15 feet.
hth,sam
