setting F stop on Cannon Digital EOS Can you open up wider than and F4 on a cannon digital EOS camera with a 18-55 lens? Would a lense change make a differance, because the settings are internal? I am having a hard time taking portraits in low lighting without flash. The F stop will not go low enough and if I use a slow shutter speed, if the child moves, I get blurred pictures.

F/stop all depends on the lens you're using.

The 18-55 that came with the digital rebel is f/3.5 to f/5.6. The 3.5 works only at the 18mm end of the lense and works up from there the more you zoom. So, the answer is yes, you can go lower than 4, but, with this lense you can only shoot at 18mm for that to happen. Hope this helps. Bob

Sharon, As Gregory says f stop is about how wide the apature is on a lens, you can buy a "faster lens" ie 2.8 or 1.8 ect but you are going to find these very expensive, the othe way to get faster shutter speeds is to change your iso setting if your using iso 200 then go to 400 or try 800

Not all fast lenses are very expensive. The Canon 50mm f1.4 is a very nice fast lens. On the EOS Digital cameras with a 1.6x sensor factor (Rebel, Rebel XT, 20D) the effective focal length will be 80mm, which is a good length for portraits. This lens is only about $300 brand new.

Thank you all for your comments and help. I have been playing more with my camera and trying some of your suggestions. I guess I will have to get a new lense, first I need to get the camera paid off! I will check out some lense prices online.

You can also try with higher ISO. take the film of higher ISO like 400 or so. this will allow u to use faster shutter speeds.
