When to remove batteries Is there a general rule about when you should remove batteries from a camera if you're not using it? I read somewhere that even if you're not using the camera, the batteries can still run down. I use NiMH in a Kodak and Lithium ion in an Olympus. Thanks.

Joyce, I can't realy answer your question about when to remove the batteries. I do know that the manual for my Digital Rebel says to remove the batteries if the camera will not be used for more than a couple of days. If you do remove the batteries, make sure that you store the batteries in a place where the contacts on the battery will not come in contact with anything conductive. That includes the other batteries. The batteries for my Digital Rebel come with a plastic cover to protect the contacts when they are not in the camera. Doing the above will increase the shelf life of single charge of the batteries. However, even stored as directed above, most rechargable batteries will slowly lose thier charge over time. Matt.

NiMH batteries will run down some whether they are in a camera or not. I have several sets of them, and usually keep one set on a charger. When I need to use a device that takes them, like my flash or my son's digital, I swap out the batteries in the device with the fresh set on the charger. Lithium Ion batteries don't have this problem. My Canon digital SLR uses a LIon battery, and I keep it in the camera all the time. I keep a spare one charged up in my camera bag, and it will stay fully charged for a long time.
