my focusing meters won't focus

Hi,
I am shooting some prom pics this weekend. I was test shooting on my backdrop last night. I shoot with the canon10d and I am using a canon 70mm 70-200 lens. I have my focusing meters set on evaluative metering. I was trying to focus on the eye of the subject, but my lens kept going in and out, in and out. It was having a hard time finding the focal point. Any suggestions?

  (a) more light
(b) use a lens with larger maximum aperture
(c) manually select the center (most sensitive) focus sensor - need to shoot in Creative mode (P, Av, Tv, M) to do this
(d) an accessory speed light with near-infrared focus assist light. If you want ambient light only, you can set Custom Function 5 to "3" (AF assist light active but will not fire flash).

Re (d):
Like (c), the Custom Function settings are active only in Creative modes.
