Photography Question

Susan Bohanon

Flash recycle time

Can anyone suggest a way to solve the slow recycle time with my flash?
I use the Canon Rebel EOS (Digital) with the 420EX Speedlite. The recycle time is so slow and it sucks the life out of any battery that comes close to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Either a seperate battery pack, like quantums battery pack. They have small sizes, one that can screw into the tripod hole on the bottom of your camera. Another slighty bigger to attach around your belt or keep in your camera bag.
Or keep using fresh batteries. My flash dosen't go thru batteries, at least not to me. But I do put new ones in when the recycle time gets close to 10-12 seconds after a full power shot.

What type of batteries are you using in the 420EX? Alkalines are notorious for long recycle times. Fastest and most consistent recycle times come with NiMH rechargeables.

Otherwise, you'll need a higher capacity external battery pack with adapter that plugs into the battery chamber. Ex: Quantum Instruments Bantam or a DIY solution.

Is NiMH the same thing as Lithium?
I have tried Lithium batteries before in my point and shoot and they run out just as fast.

Thanks for the responses.

NiMH stands for Nickel Metal Hydride. These are rechargeables and different from Lithiums, which are generally single use like Alkalines (though there are Lithium rechargeables).

Thank you! I read your DIY Solution link and it was very helpful. As it turns out, I have a set of those NiMH batteries and just didn't realize that's what they were.

Thanks again!

Just my 2 cents worth, but if your flash drains batteries uncharacteristically it may be shorting the batteries out, and that may be the cause of the drainage. It's a possibility.

My second point is regarding the NIMH batteries: that's the way to go.

And the best NIMH batteries in the UNIVERSE are MAHA ENERGY batteries! No I don't work for them or have stock in their products. I just use them, in EVERYTHING I own that takes batteries.

Especially in MY 420EX, and they recycle FAST, and last LONG.

You can get them from www.thomasdistributing.com who is the authorized distributor of MAHA batteries.

Later, I think I have a sunset to capture....

Wow - this is good information.
Thank you!

I think I may check into purchasing some of these batteries.

Thanks again!
