It could be a couple of things - 1. Your lens' contacts are not mating properly with the camera's contacts.

My D70 does this when I use a lens with an aperture ring when the aperture hasn't been set to the smallest opening (largest F number). Maybe you can give this a try?

Excatly What Johan Said, Lock The Aperture Ring To The Highest Numbered FStop.Most All Nikon Cameras Does This:-)
