Ever Heard of the Lens Baby?

I was thinking the Lens Baby could be something worth trying out ... but wanted to know if anyone's ever used this lens before.

Shot with the lens baby. Focus Is much softer on the edges of the image. because I centered the focus on the players at the line. It is still soft overall- like I said it takes some getting used to.

Hi Carrie,
I picked up a Lens Baby ... I figured it was worth a try at the price. I bought at the Show at the Javitz Center for around $100. It's pretty cool, but you need to play around with it for a while before you get the hang of it. The focus is controlled by pushing or pulling the lens towards or away from the body, and the area of focus can also be put anywhere on your image since the lens is mounted on a flexible hose.
I think the Lens Baby is worth the buck. I will upload an image that I shot with it. You can see for yourself.

OK, thank you. It really does look like something worth playing with - and isn't that the idea of photography anyway ... to capture something with a different eye? Thanks : )

That sample photo reminds me of an old black and white TV set. I suppose I does have its purposes.

  Hello Carrie,
At the PPA convention in New Orleans this year, the speakers were absolutely wild about the Lens Baby. If you think it will add to your style of photogrpahy, I would go for it!

Geesh, thanks to this discussion, I had to go find out what a LensBaby was. Now, lo and behold, I'm out a $100 because I just had to buy me a LensBaby! Laf! This goofy lens is so cool. What a discovery for me! Can't wait to play with it. Thanks all!

You may also purchase them from your local professional camera store.

Speaking of toys, another cool thing that was pushed at the PPA convention is an ExpoDisc. It helps with light balance issues without having to use grey cards and all of that stuff.

I believe it's expodisc.com. I checked it out and it looks like it's primarily for digital cameras. I primarily use film, so it's not anything I'll be getting very soon. Looks interesting, though.

site for expodisc? Try the snack aisle in the grocery store. Top to a pringles can supposedly works the same way.

Yeah, we're getting off track with expodisc, but a pringles top will do the trick? Is that the semi-opaque ones or the near-clear ones that I've been seeing lately?

The Expodisc may also be purchased at your local pro camera store.

Actually the Expodisc is for is for both film and digital cameras. There is a "digital" Expodisc on their website, but according to my supplier, a retailer who has been in the pro photography business for decades, there is not a difference between the two. It is the company's way to address concerns of digital users who need to see "digital" labeled on their accessories. But the original Expodisc is for either film or digital.

The way that the disc works, if I may paraphrase, is that you place the disc on your lens as you would a filter and set your WB with the "pre" setting. On my Nikon, the display will read either "good" or "no good". If it reads "no good" you tweak as necessary. With digital, it saves from having to use postproduction work in Photoshop. With film, well, the results are right the first time.

As with any filter, you can buy the larger disc and use it with your smaller lenses by either purchasing an adapter ring or holding the disc in front of your lens to set your WB.
