Buying Lens

Hi everybody
I’m a beginner photographer, actually it is a new hobby and I loved it, also I'm very confused about lens, I want to buy a lens (NIKKOR) frankly I don’t know which I have to take between AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80 – 400mm f / 4.5 – 5.6D ED (5x) and AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f / 2.8G IF-ED (2.9x) and why? Any help please because I have to decide in 3 days.

Thanks a lot,
Assad,

You are probably already aware of this, but just in case -
The full functionality of the AF-S (Silent Wave in-lens focus motor) and VR (Vibration Reduction) and G (no aperture ring on the lens) features of these lenses is limited to only the most recent autofocus Nikon bodies. See http://www.nikonians.com/html/resources/nikon_articles/other/compatibility.html

I made a similar decision in deciding between Canon's 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and 70-200 f/2.8L USM. I chose the 70-200 + 2x teleconverter. Very versatile. 70-200 alone is very very sharp, f/2.8 gives great results in lower light and great background blur for portraits. With the 2x it gives acceptable performance as an occasional 140-400 f/5.6 lens.

However, if you anticipate greater use at the 350mm to 400mm range, then the 100-400L would be preferred since it is sharper (and in Canon's case faster focusing) than the 70-200+2x combination.

I would expect similar performance comparison between the Nikon 80-400 VR and the 70-200 VR.

"However, if you anticipate greater use at the 350mm to 400mm range..."
I meant _250mm_ to 400.
