Slave flash trick undexposes

I read a trick that if I put a black negative exposure over my on camera flash, it will let minimum visible light through, but enough infra red light through to fire my slave flash. It fires my slave flash but my subject is extremely underexposed. Why is it underxposing my shot?

...Could be one of two things:
Either your slaved flash is too far from the subject, or your shutter speed is too fast and the slaved flash is going off AFTER the actual exposure.

  Dear Rob:
Tell us which exposure mode you used, which f/stop and shutter speed you used, which slave flash you used, how far it was from the subject, and which mode the slave flash was in.

  Slave Flash trick underexposure #2

I used auto, programable and shutter priority modes, with shutter speeds varying from 60th to 10 second exposures. My camera is a D70 and my flash is an sb80 dx which doesnt't work automatically on my camera. There is only one mode on the slave flash.
I appreciate your input.
Thanks
