slave flash out of sync

I really need to master a slave flash set-up quick and this is killing me! I have read my flash and camera manual and looked on the internet and can not find what I need.
I bought a new Nikon SB-800 to use with my SB-50DX and my D100. The manual confirms these are usuable together (with the 50 as the master)
I set them up and they do trigger each other but apparently not in sync. The instant that the shutter is open, only my on camera flash is firing. (Taking pictures OF the slave flash confirms that it is not firing on time) I don't have 'red eye' turned on my camera, so.. as far as I know there is no 'pre-flash' firing.(???) Is there something else that would cause a pre-fire or something I've missed in general set-up? (I also tried a friends older version of the SB-800/the 80 and it did help, also firing out of sync)
Thanks for any help!!!! I'm going nuts with this!

  Dear Ricki:
Try this: With the camera's exposure mode set to manual, take photos of the slave flash, using progressively slower and slower shutter speeds, until you get a shot where the slave is seen to fire.
You don't mention which exposure modes you have tried, or which shutter speeds, but it's possible that this setup will not work at the highest sync speed that the D100 offers.
If worst comes to worst, you can contact Nikon's tech rep for your region, or their website.
