Light Meter Hi, When I am setting the aperture on my Praktica MTL3, I hold down the light meter (duh). If I close it, the needle of the lightmeter goes down like it is supposed to, but the viewfinder gets darker and darker, even if the needle is above the middle mark. Since I have the lens on auto and not manual, when I let go of the light meter the viewfinder clears back up, but my question is: Should I just pay attention to the needle or does the viewfinder going dark (and the circle in the middle going dark) indicate something? Thanks for your help! If I have been clear, let me know.

I have the manual--it doesn't say anything about the viewfinder getting dark and doesn't give examples of what the "metering wedges" are supposed to do. If I'm missing it, let me know. Thanks.

The viewfinder going dark is normal. When you press the metering key it stops the aperture down to the selected setting. You're looking through the lens with a smaller diameter, letting less light in. While darker, you should be able to see the increase in depth of field from the smaller aperture (depth of field preview). While the metering key is pressed, if the meter needle is in the "+" region, the current settings will give too much exposure, so you should be set a faster shutter speed and/or smaller aperture (larger f-number), even if it makes the view darker. If the needle goes to the "-" area, then the settings will under expose and you should set slower shutter speed and/or larger aperture (smaller f-number).
