Tamron incompatible with Nikon?

I have a Nikon F70 and a Tamron 28-200mm AF lens for Nikon. This lens has pretty great reviews from other sites, and I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one experiencing compatibility problems with the Nikon body and the Tamron lens. The autofocus is not working even though I'm positive the settings on the camera body are correct. So far, I've been taking pictures with just the manual focus and the pictures are turning out great--only it gets pretty frustrating when you miss a lot of photo ops just because you're stuck doing the focusing manually.

I would like to know if there is something wrong with the equipment, if this is something that has been known to happen, or if I'm inadvertently doing something wrong.

Lens specifications indicate that compatibility should not be an issue with Nikon bodies, but the Nikon manual says full functionality (AF included?) can only be achieved with Nikon lenses. On the other hand, my other Tamron lens' AF works fine with the Nikon body.

Since I asked someone to buy this lens for me abroad, it doesn't seem likely that I can have it returned. I've read that Tamron lenses are cheaper and better quality-wise than Nikon lenses, but given this experience with Tamron, I'm hesitant to buy the brand again. This time, I am planning to sell the Tamron lens and play safe with a Nikkor lens that has a smaller zoom and is lighter. Is this a good idea, or is my problem with Tamron just a factory mistake?

Anyway, I would appreciate any input from anyone out there since finding a repair/camera shop is not an option for me at this point. Thanks!

drawback of made to fit lenses is that sometimes the electronics don't always match.
sigma is known to have the policy of if there's a compatibility problem, send it to them and they will update it.
don't know if tamron has the same way off doing things.
