Micro Drive: Recovering Photos? I have a 2G micro drive, and I can't get the photos off of it. I was wondering if there is any way possible to recover them? Thanks.

It depends on what the problem really is. If the problem is mechanical (disc is physically damaged, won't spin, heads won't track properly, etc.), then you are probably are looking at an expensive job - if it can even be done. There are companies that can recover data from damaged hard drives, but they may or may not be able to work with micro drives as well. Do a Google search for "damaged hard drive recovery". If the problem is just a data corruption problem, you might be able to recover images yourself with a data recovery program. Start by checking to see if the manufacturer of your micro drive has software for this. If they don't, search around, since there are lots of programs on the market that might work. Chris A. Thanks Chris. My computer does not even acknowledge the micro drive, so I am sure it's most likely the expensive type of recovery. But I will do the searches that you suggested. Again thanks.

Also, does the micro drive work in your camera? If you can still see the images when the drive is in the camera, then it is more likely that you will be able to recover them. If it is working in the camera, try connecting the camera to the computer with a USB cable instead of reading the card with a reader. This will be slower, but it might work. www.cavphotos.com

Unfortunately, it's not working in my camera either -, it states card is not initializing. Well, I'll still see what I can do to try to recover them. Thanks so much for your help!

There are a number of photo recovery programs available. One that I used recently that recovered all of my photos off a hosed 1 Gig flash disk is "Zero Assumption Recovery". It is available from their website as a free download "http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm" Good luck saving your photos. Ray

Hi Marilou, Another excellent photo recovery program is Rescue Pro by Sandisk. I have used it successfully several times. You can find info on it at: http://www.lc-tech.com/software/software.html Be well,

I use Flash Fixers' Image Recall for that - they have a 10 pictures recovery trial version and they recover RAW (on PC only for now- tiff on Mac)

Make sure you don't have any goo on the contacts. If you are getting an initialization error it implies it can't read the card, either because of corruption as previously mentioned or because there is something interfering with communication between devices. "Gently" use a pencil eraser on the contacts of the card after inspecting for visual stuff (PB&J, etc.)If you can get it to read with the camera but still not in the computer, CHKDSK

Sorry to hear about your problem. Let this be a lesson. Next time use only CF cards. Micro drives has micro components that cannot take rough beating.
