How to shoot detailed photo of the moon I am currently using a Nikon Fm3a 35mm SLR with a Sigma 28-300 lens. I have a tripod, but no shutter release cable yet. Iv'e been trying to photograph a nice detailed picture of the moon with no luck. To avoid camera shake I set my aperture/shutter speed etc and then set my timer to 10 seconds and let it do its thing. What is the best phase of the moon to photograph? Is it absolutely necessary to have a shutter release cable? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance- JJS

Since you do have a tripod you can use the camera's selftimer in place of the cable release. A rule of thumb for taking photos of the full moon is f11 at a shutter speed equal to your ISO. I would recommend that you bracket exposures though.

Shouldn't take a lot of reading. It's just it's been a common question. It's easy to do. Just start at a base line of f/11 125th iso100 and go from there. You can shoot it hand held if you want. A tripod may be more comfortable if the moon is high.
