which to buy?? I would like to buy a camera that I can use for school events for my children. Nothing too complicated but something that wil let me shoot from a distance in a dim lit enviromnent. Like christmas programs,..etc.. I have a digital camera and when I zoom it of course gives crappy pic's. (not enough light) Is there something out there for me or am I dreaming? I was looking at slr's but have no idea about what the lens' do. Anyone???

look into consumer cameras with 10x or 12x OPTICAL zoom, these are fairly large compact cameras that do not have interchangable lenses, so you don't have to worry about that. I say optical zoom because many cameras advertise high zoom numbers but a lot of it is in digital zoom, which is worthless. Don't even look at it. You may want to go to Best Buy or a similar store, their staff is usually very helpful.

Okay at the risk of sounding totally stupid, what do you mean by "consumer"? Do you mean digital or film? I looked at my digi I have now and it is only 3 optical, so I guess thats why "it" stinks. I just want to be able to take the best pic's I can.

I was thinking of digital cameras, I don't know much about film. By consumer I simply meant non-SLR, consumer cameras are cheaper, smaller, and easier to use.

Here's another question for anyone that knows. If you have a camera that takes different lens', which kind would you need for the same needs?

A wide-angle to telephoto zoom would probably be good. something like 50-200mm, but the camera and lenses can be very expensive.
