What to do about ink on back of photo

Does the kind of paper and/or ink make a difference on whether or not the picture might eventually be ruined if there is writing on the back of the photo?

My sister-in-law has concerns about some ink on the back of her photos eventually bleeding through. She said the photo paper is good and all ... she is just worried and she doesn't want to go through the trouble of scanning all her images.

I don't think she has the negatives.

Thanks a bunch!

If the paper is fiber based, there is good cause to be alarmed, as the ink will eventually bleed through. If the paper is resin coated, then there's a good chance that the plastic coating will halt any bleeding through. My guess is your paper is resin coated, not fiber based, but a knowledgeable employee at a good camera store or photo lab can tell you for sure what kind of paper you have.

Resin may not bleed thru, but photos stored together can get the ink from the back of one to get on the top of the one beneath it.
