Bogen/Manfrotto Tripod Head Hi! I just got my first really good tripod (meaning I had to buy legs and a head seperately lol). My question is more about the head. It's the Manfrotto 3030 3way pan/tilt. It's really great but I'm not sure of how something works. There's a knob which generally will control the up/down movement of the camera while on the head but I believe shoot with the camera in vertical orientation, you have to turn the camera sideways and use that same axis to tilt the camera sideways. Then, I don't have any way to move the camera up and down while it's vertical unless I actually turn the camera on the place that holds it on the tripod. Any advice on this? I'll make it a little simpler if that didn't make sense. I turn the camera on it's side to shoot vertical but if I'm higher than the subject, I can't tilt the camera down without adjusting the quick release plate. Thanks for your help!

Andrew, I have a Manfroto 3021BN with a 2029 head, which is basically the same head as yours without the quick release plate. If you will PM me and give me your phone # I will try to walk you through it.

Certainly can't beat Kerry's super cutstomer support offer. I used to use 3030, btw. I used the handgrip B to position the camera in vertical mode, and I could still use the handgrip C (the middle one) to pivot the camera Up and Down.

Here's a photo for reference... The bottom grip moves left and right, the middle moves up and down, and the top one is the....hmm, sorry, I'm stupid lol. Ok, the top one moves what would be called "roll" in aerial manuevers. Yeah, so, I feel dumb now... I figure I'll just turn the top one to the side and then use the normal up and down (middle grip) to aim up or down. I think what threw me off is the plate that attaches to the camera. It has two arrows on it showing which way the camera mounts on it. One to the normal horizontal part and another pointing down the legth of the plate saying "Lens (points this way)." I'll still post the picture anyway... I was really excited to hear "the legend" though, hehe.

That's exactly the way I would use it.

P.S. congrats on your purchase. it should last you a long long time. I got pretty much the same thing for christmas. the legs I believe are the 3011 and my head is the 3030. very strong. I throw my RB on there and it laughs at me saying "bring it on, that ain't nothin'!" haha, that's a very nice investment I believe! have fun!

I still have a problem with my 20D with battery grip and the lens that will be on this next photo. I still don't really want to pay $70-$80 for a tripod collar...

Actually, no. It's a 200 f/2.8 sorry! :) Kinda stinks for anything other than headshots and slightly wider but it's good for some sports and theater stuff. It was between that and the 70-200 f/4L but I needed the extra speed over the medium telephoto.

So how nice of a lens is it and how much did it run you? I'm saving up for a 5D paired with a 135 f/2L, my dream lens. I read the reviews on it like every night and pretty much have all the specs memorized! lol. I really really really really really want that combo!. But does the 200 2.8 work well?

Yeah, I love this lens but like I said, just because it's fixed as such a long 200mm or 320mm on the 20D, it's a little tight sometimes but I've gotten some great shots at a few concerts that I've been at. Recently I had a friend of mine model for me to help me out with my portfolio. Most of the shots I used my 50 1.8 and sigma 24-70 2.8 but none of them, no matter how far they were stopped down, beat the 200 2.8L at even 2.8 and 3.5 or around there. The headshots I got were AMAZING. I have never seen anything that sharp before. I have also used this lens for some black and white stuff and I got an insanely sharp negative of some wood detail with TMax100 in either tmax or d76, I don't remember. If you're interested in seeing those headshots let me know and I can email a copy. I would put it online somewhere, but not matter what I do, it just doesn't look as sharp as an actual print. Also, the autofocusing is soooo quiet...if I wasn't holding the camera right up to my face you probably wouldn't be able to hear the mechanism working at all. I'm sure that 135 will be just as amazing. Do you have a raw converter for photoshop and the 20D by chance?

that's a big fat negative man. I don't have a digital yet but recently a kind gentleman sent me some original files of the 5D at 800, 1600, and 3200. after soiling the chair (lol!!) I decided that it's time. so as soon as I get back from the dirt i'm going to look into a 5D and whatnot. my email is here. that'd be awesome if you could send me a file or two with the 200! as much reading as I do I can't believe I never noticed the 200 2.8, and at that price.. that might be another option I look into. in a perfect world i'd have the 85 1.2 but that ain't happenin' for a while! lol. but i'm sure i'll be equally as happy with the 135 or the 200! thanks man!.
