I need some recommendations on how to adjust for lighting in a ribbon canyon in Zion National Park.

  hello john,
what I would do, and I am not that good.
use my camera meter and meter off the brightest part.then meter off the shadows and split the difference.
9 am or 5 pm is my guess for the best light.i haven't been there so it is just a guess.if it's cloudy I would think anytime.
i am also hoping that someone else posts so I can actually learn something.

If you have Photoshop you can make several exposures and combine them in Photoshop. Another option would be a split ND filter but those aren't ideal with uneven canyon walls. Here's a link to a tutorial that explains how to combine them. Just Google the subject and you can come up with other sites explaining it as well.
